The biggest is "G" (garden, big gauge, LGB) and has gained popularity over the years, because of our warmer weather, and the need for space.
Probably, "O"/"O27" is the size most of us are most familiar, LIONEL train sets have over the years, become a tradition, and is favored by the "players" of trains. O scale track is 1-1/4" gauge. Great for sound enthusiasts, and offers a wealth of wonderful operating accessories.
By far the most popular ,is "HO" Gauge. Because of the popularity, there is more product available in all categories. The track it runs on is 16.5mm gauge.
"N" gauge, gaining popularity all the time. Because of it's size, you can build large layouts in a very limited space. The track it runs on is 9mm guage. Ideal for running long trains.
